Introduction to Flash MX 2004

By Craig Campbell

Running Time: 15 hours, 54 minutes

Overview

Flash MX 2004 guru Craig Campbell spends almost 16 hours walking you through getting started with Flash. By the end of this series, you'll know enough to create your own website in Flash using animation, popup menus, sound, video, etc.  You will also be working on a project website throughout the course of this series.

Detailed Video Descriptions

0 - Introduction to the Video Series (Running Time - 1:03)
In this video, Craig introduces himself and tells you what you can expect to learn from this video series.

  1 - What is Flash? (Running Time - 4:44)
In this video, we discuss the problem of compatibility that faces web designers today.  With a number of different browsers on the market, web developers face numerous frustrations in trying to make their websites compatible on all platforms.  Luckily for us, Flash does not have this problem.  Flash uses plugins to ensure that websites created in Flash are identical no matter the platform.

  2 - Website Tour (Running Time - 8:33)
Throughout the course of the video series, we'll be building a website, and in this video, Craig takes you on a quick tour of the website, which can be viewed here.

  3 - The Interface (Running Time - 27:51)
Before you can learn how to create amazing applications in Flash MX 2004, it might be helpful to learn how to get around in the Flash interface.  In this video, Craig gives you a tour of the interface, including the toolbar, panels, and panel sets.

4 - Using the Oval Tool (Running Time - 12:29)
We finally get started drawing in Flash MX 2004 in this video, where we learn how to draw circles and ovals on the stage using the oval tool.

5 - The Rectangle and PolyStar Tools (Running Time - 10:22)
Here we learn how to draw rectangles, squares, polygons, and stars.

  6 - The Selection Tool (Running Time - 7:53)
Once you draw something on the stage, it's important to know how to select your objects or portions of your objects for further editing.  In this video, Craig shows you how to do this using the selection tool.

  7 - Altering Shapes (Running Time - 38:46)
In this video, Craig shows you how to take the objects you've drawn on the stage and tweak them, altering their shapes, changing their colors, and resizing, skewing, and distorting them.  This video covers the selection tool, the subselection tool, and the free transform tool.

  8 - Line Tool (Running Time - 20:33)
In this video, Craig shows you how to create and modify lines using the line tool. He also explains how to alter shapes on your stage by using lines to bisect and distort the shapes.

9 - The Pencil and Brush Tools (Running Time - 15:19)
In this video, Craig shows you how to draw with the pencil tool and the brush tool.

  10 - The Eraser Tool (Running Time - 5:43)
Now that you know how to draw all kinds of shapes and objects on the screen, Craig teaches you how to get rid of it all using the eraser tool.

   11 - The Pen Tool (Running Time - 10:50)
With the pen tool, you can create lines and shapes by creating one point of the line or shape at a time.  These points can act as corners OR curves, and in this video, Craig teaches you how to use this somewhat complex drawing tool.

  12 - Color Management Tools (Running Time - 17:24)
Unless you figure out how to use Flash's color management tools, your graphics will end up looking pretty dull.  In this video, Craig teaches you the basics of using the paint bucket tool, the ink bottle tool, and the eye dropper tool.

13 - Using Color in Flash (Running Time - 46:18)
In this two-part video, Craig teaches you how to use the color mixer and color swatches panels.  He also discusses the use of gradients, bitmap fills, and the "lock fills" option.

  14 - Using Groups (Running Time - 15:11)
While drawing raw objects and shapes on the stage, intersecting or overlapping objects sometimes cause unwanted effects, such as the deletion of all or portion of another shape.  In this video, Craig shows you how to use groups to overcome this annoyance.

  15 - The Align Panel (Running Time - 16:07)
When you have multiple objects on the stage, it's helpful to know how to arrange them neatly.  In this video, Craig shows you how to use the align panel to align, distribute, and match the size of multiple objects at once.

   16 - Object Properties (Running Time - 6:50)
Once you've created a graphic, you can use the properties inspector to customize the graphic's size and placement on the stage.  In this video, Craig shows you how to resize and move objects using this helpful tool.

  17 - Working With Layers (Running Time - 24:48)
In this video, Craig teaches you how to create multiple layers for your graphics so you can keep your graphics from interfering with each other on the stage.

  18 - The Text Tool (Running Time - 29:38)
Your Flash website can only go so far without text in it, so in this video, Craig shows you the basic functions and use of the text tool.

  19 - Text Fields Explained (Running Time - 7:59)
In this video, Craig shows you the basics of static text, dynamic text, and input text.

  20 - Your First Assignment (Running Time - 10:40)
In this video, Craig asks you to take everything you've learned about drawing in Flash and apply it to the website you'll be building throughout the course of this series.  You will be creating the header of the website and the logo.

21 - Getting Creative With the Drawing Tools (Running Time - 57:34)
In this section, Craig walks you through the first assignment and shows you how he created everything that he has asked you to create for the assignment.

  22 - Motion Tweening (Running Time - 12:43)
It's finally time to start animating!  In this video, Craig shows you the basics of using motion tweening to move an object from one part of the stage to another.

  23 - Frame-by-Frame Animation (Running Time - 19:47)
In this video, Craig shows you how to construct an animation similar to the one we made in the motion tweening video.  The difference is that in this video, he shows you how to construct the animation one frame at a time.

   24 - Motion Guides (Running Time - 6:59)
A motion guide is simply a path for an animation to follow.  In this video, Craig shows you how to make a realistic bouncing ball animation that follows such a path.

  25 - Easing (Running Time - 7:22)
One way you can modify your animation is by adding "easing" to your tweens.  Easing deals with altering the speed of your tweens to make them more interesting.  In this video, Craig shows you how to add "easing" to the bouncing ball animation to make it look a little more realistic.

  26 - Shape Tweening (Running Time - 13:01)
Shape tweening allows you to morph one shape into another quickly and easily.  In this video, Craig demonstrates the basics of shape tweening by morphing shapes as wells as text.

27 - Timeline Effects (Running Time - 4:49) For those of you who don't have time to make complex animation effects yourself, Flash MX 2004 provides their own small library of timeline effects that you can add to your Flash movie.  In this video, we discuss how to access and use these timeline effects.

  28 - Symbols (Running Time - 15:56)
When you begin to put a lot of graphics on your stage, you'll notice that your timeline begins to get awfully crowded with layers.  Also, if you have graphics that you plan to use over and over again, your file size begins to grow rapidly.  In this video, Craig shows us how both of these problems can be solved quickly and easily by converting our graphics into symbols.

  29 - Modifying Symbols (Running Time - 15:12)
In this video, Craig shows you how to modify symbols and symbol instances.  He also shows you how to add various effects to a symbol during a motion tween.

  30 - Movie Clip Symbols (Running Time - 20:50)
We've already talked about creating graphic symbols, and in this video, Craig discusses movie clip symbols, which are simply symbols designed to store animations that contain their own timeline.

  31 - Button Symbols (Running Time - 9:38)
The third and final type of symbol is a button symbol.  A button symbol is use to create interactive buttons for your Flash file.  In this video, Craig shows you how to create your own buttons.

32 - Buttons for the Website (Running Time - 20:07)
In this video, Craig shows you how to create the buttons used on the sample website.

  33 - Basic Interactivity (Running Time - 16:38)
In this video, Craig shows you how to create buttons that will take you to different pages in your Flash website.  He also discusses the importance of using frame labels in your timeline.

  34 - Website Skeleton (Running Time - 30:31)
In this video, Craig shows you how to use everything you've learned so far about basic interactivity to put together a basic skeleton for our project website.

  35 - Using Masks (Running Time - 24:37)
In this video, Craig shows you how to hide and reveal certain sections of a graphic by using layer masks.  He also shows you how to animate a masked object as well as how to animate the mask itself.

  36 - Importing Graphics (Running Time - 10:31)
In this video, Craig shows you how to import graphics into your Flash file.  He also takes a moment to show you how you can keep your library organized.

  37 - Second Assignment (Running Time - 7:38)
In this video, Craig assigns you the task of creating the FAQ section of the project website.  He walks you through the basics of what's expected and gives you a few hints on how to accomplish what he's asking you to do.

  38 - Assignment 2 Revealed, Part 1 (Running Time - 25:45)
In this video, Craig begins explaining how he did the second assignment by showing you how he created the FAQ movie clip and buttons.

  39 - Assignment 2 Revealed, Part 2 (Running Time - 35:53)
In this video, Craig shows you how he created the different sections of the FAQ movie clip along with the animations required for the FAQ section.

  40 - Assignment 2 Revealed, Part 3 (Running Time - 12:59)
In the last section of the assignment 2 videos, Craig adds actionscript to the buttons to add interactivity to the FAQ section of the project website.

  41 - Instance Names (Running Time - 27:51)
So far we've only used buttons to take us to a different frame in our timeline.  In this video, Craig shows you how to use instance names to give a label to a movie clip so that we can point to that movie clip and control it using a button.

  42 - TextArea Component (Running Time - 17:31)
In this video, Craig shows you how to use Flash components to quickly and easily create a text field with a pre-made scrollbar attached to it.

  43 - Popup Menus (Running Time - 19:14)
In this video, Craig shows you how to quickly and easily create a popup menu in Flash.

  44 - Popup Menus, Part 2 (Running Time - 41:33)
Using what you learned in the previous video, Craig shows you how to make the scrolling menu for the project website.

  45 - Buttons on Buttons (Running Time - 47:36)
When you place one button on top of another button, the button on top makes all buttons below it inactive.  In this video, Craig shows you some creative uses for this feature of Flash.

  46 - Importing Sound (Running Time - 22:41)
In this video, Craig shows you how to make your website a little more exciting by adding sound to your Flash file.

  47 - Importing Video (Running Time - 11:55)
In this video, Craig shows you how import video into your Flash file and how to create buttons that control the playback of your video.

  48 - File Types (Running Time - 7:42)
FLA files, SWF files, EXE files: what are they, and how do they work?  In this video, Craig explains the different file types used in Flash.

49 - Loading External SWF Files (Running Time - 12:47)
Now that we've finished the products section of the project website, which is a whole separate Flash file itself, Craig shows you how to import that file into your main Flash movie using the loadMovie function.

  50 -  Basic Preloader (Running Time - 32:14)
Sometimes it may take a moment for your Flash file to load, and if the user ends up waiting too long, he might think that something's wrong with your website and move on to something else.  This is why it's important to build something into your Flash file to let the user know that your site is loading.  In this video, Craig shows you how to build a basic preloader that does just that.

  51 -  Customizing Your HTML (Running Time - 6:45)
Now that our website is finished, Craig shows you how to add some final touches by centering your Flash movie in the browser window and changing the background color.
