Adding Video to Your Website Using Flash 8

Adding Video to Your Website Using Flash 8

By Thad Clevenger and Craig Campbell

Running Time: 4 hours, 37 minutes

Overview

In this series, former Sony Online Entertainment animator Thad Clevenger walks the beginner through the basics of where video on the Internet came from, what it is, and where it is going. He also walks you through the confusing maze of the major video formats, how to encode video, and directs you to various free or shareware encoders.

Craig Campbell then picks up and walks you through the process of how to put video on your website. This well known Flash Guru will also bring his mastery of Dreamweaver 8 into this series as he crosses over into how to add video using Dreamweaver 8.

Detailed Video Descriptions

  1. Introduction (Running Time - 1:35)
  2. Part 1 - Video Formats Explained (Running Time - 0:32)
    1. Video Players (Running Time: 6:32)
This Video gives you an overview of some of the more common video players out there. It is good background knowledge and useful to know what players your audience is using.
    2. Codecs and Container Formats (Running Time: 6:22)
Codecs are some of the more confusing aspects of video players. Here Thad walks you through exactly what a codec is and how they work. He also covers Container Formats and exactly what their function is.
  3. Part 2 - How to Encode Video (Running Time - 0:58)
    1. Terms You Should Know (Running Time: 8:00)
When encoding video it is important to understand some of the basic terms you will encounter. In this video Thad covers a few of the terms you are likely to see when encoding your videos.
    2. Tools to Encode Video(Running Time: 2:31)
In this video, Thad takes a look at some of the leading tools used to encode video.
    3. Cheap, Free, or Shareware Encoders (Running Time: 1:21)
Just because something is expensive doesn't always mean it's the best tool out there. In this video Thad will introduce you to some of the cheaper or even free tools that can be used to encode video.
    4. Flash 8 Video Encoder (Running Time: 10:53)
In this video, Craig shows you how to encode videos into flv format using the stand-alone Flash 8 Video Encoder that ships with Flash.
    5. The Quicktime Encoder (Running Time: 13:14)
In this video Thad covers the quicktime encoder. This encoder is available to you if you own quicktime pro and has a powerful list of features. If you use a mac or deal with .mov files then this encoder is a great tool.
    6. Windows Media Encoder (Running Time: 7:05)
Here Thad covers the Windows Media Encoder. This encoder isn't useful for Flash video, but it is an extremely powerful and useful tool to encode video to Windows Media format. This is another great format, especially for HD movies.
    7. RAD Video Tools Encoder (Running Time: 3:28)
This is a free program you can download to encode avi files as well as several other file types. Once again this program isn't useful for Flash video but it is useful for anyone wanting to convert to an avi.
    8. Setting Guidelines for the Web (Running Time: 3:03)
In this video Thad covers what he believes to be some good settings for your web video. If you are looking to put video on the web then these settings are a good starting place before you try some of your own.
  4. Part 3 - Delivery Methods (Running Time - 0:37)
    1. Embedded Video (Running Time: 7:29)
The concept of embedded video isn't hard to understand. You've seen embedded video in many websites already, but when it comes to embedding video in Flash there are a few things you should know.
    2. Progressive Download (Running Time: 3:41)
In this video Thad covers the ins and outs of progressive video. You'll also get some examples of progressive video in action.
    3. Streaming Video (Running Time: 5:02)
In this video Thad will explain what streaming video is and why it is used for the web. You'll get some good information on when you should or should not use streaming video.
  5. Part 4 - Adding Video to Your Website (Running Time - 4:44)
From linking directly to a video to embedding it into a Flash document, Craig discusses multiple methods of adding video to your html and Flash websites.
    1. Using Dreamweaver (Running Time: 5:09)
In this video, Craig opens up Dreamweaver and walks you through the methods for embedding a Flash Video into your html page. Using this method, you can choose from several skins for your video player.
    2. Importing Videos into a Flash File (Running Time: 10:57)
Importing videos into Flash is now easier than ever. In this video, Craig will show you how to import a video into a Flash file that you intend to be published as a full Flash website. These importing options give you even more skins to choose from.
    3. Adding a New Video to Your Flash File (Running Time: 11:54)
In this video, Craig gets you started with your custom video player by showing you how to create a new Video Object and get it running.
    4. Drawing Your Controls (Running Time - 22:47)
In this video, Craig draws all the controls for the custom video player from scratch. These controls will eventually allow the user to play and pause the video, scrub across the playhead, and adjust the volume.
    5. Play/Pause (Running Time - 21:07)
Using the pause() method, Craig shows you how to construct and add code to the play/pause toggle button for your custom video player.
    6. Stop Button (Running Time - 6:29)
The Stop button will use the pause() method as well, but when the user clicks this button, we want the video not only to pause, but also to reset to the beginning. In this video, Craig will show you the code you need in order to accomplish this.
    7. Loader Bar (Running Time - 9:08)
If you've ever built a preloader before, then this topic shouldn't be too foreign to you, because that's exactly what's happening here. Craig will walk you through how to create a bar that shows the user how much of the video has been loaded.
    8. Playhead (Running Time - 11:39)
The playhead allows the user to see how far into the video we are and how much is still left to play. In this video, Craig will show you how to add Actionscript to your playhead to make it move along the progress bar as the video plays.
    9. Scrubbing the Playhead (Running Time - 23:21)
Not only do we want the playhead to show us the current position of the video, but we also want the user to be able to click the playhead and drag it back and forth, so they can instantly go to whatever part of the video they'd like.
    10. Mute Button (Running Time - 15:34)
In this video, Craig shows you how to harness control of the sound in your video so that you can adjust it as you see fit. Once you've harnessed it, he'll show you how to make your mute button work.
    11. Volume Slider (Running Time - 18:06)
In this video, Craig will demonstrate how to make a slider that the user can drag back and forth in order to adjust the volume of the video.
    12. Make the Player Invisible (Running Time - 12:34)
If your custom video player is overlapping your video, it may be getting in the way, so in this video, Craig shows you how you can make the player invisible except for when you hover the mouse cursor over the video itself.
    13. Playing Multiple Videos (Running Time - 20:25)
Changing videos is as simple as calling on the play() method again, and in this video, Craig will show you how to create a menu of videos that the user can select from.

4. ** BONUS ** ($97.00 Value) Web Design webinar entitled: "Building Websites With Real Value - How to Find Clients Who Will Gladly Pay You $10,000 Or More For Their Website"

Stop settling for $500 to $1000 web design projects and start making some real money. More importantly, start building a real business. You know, the kind that will allow you to take some time off and still have money coming in. The kind of business where you are building an asset that can be sold at some point in the future.

If you are tired of working long hours grinding away in front the computer just to make the same money as a Starbucks barista, then you will be very interested in the following information.

Each week I host a webinar where I show designers the exact skills you need to develop to take your business to the next level. For some, that means being able to go from part-time to full-time. How nice would it be to trade in your day job for a successful business where you call the shots. For others that is means getting your very first client.

I even show the pros how to grow their business. Just last week we had a guy that fit in that top 1% category. He is charging $30,000, on the low end, for a website. He was making more money than almost all of the other 22 attendees combined.

I opened his eyes to some new ideas, one of which has the potential to double his already successful business. That is the thing about the top 1% - they are always anxious to learn something new. He could have easily passed on the opportunity to attend the webinar based on his success, but there he was soaking up new ideas to grow his business.

How To Attend The Webinar

The webinar is a 1 hour presentation plus a live Q and A session. Most of these sessions last two hours or more.

We use Webex to facilitate the webinars. This allows you to watch and listen to the live presentation via the web. We use the chat feature to create a very interactive experience. I am constantly asking questions and polling the audience. This has resulted in some great sessions allowing you to learn from other attendees also.
